Like many in Australia, since COVID, I have become used to rarely using cash.
It has been ‘Tap and Go’ for small amounts and only needing a PIN for larger amounts.
That does not always work in many countries!
You Might Have Problems
Many developing countries tend to be cash based.
I have recently not been able to use cards on many occasions in; the Philippines, Timor Leste, and Bhutan.
Even first world Japan much prefers cash.
In Chile and Bhutan I recently had lots of problems getting money from ATMs.
Most ‘Street Food’ vendors are going to want cash.
If you are going to a country with a strong ‘Tipping Culture you are going to need plenty of cash including some small notes.
In many countries you will need cash to visit a public toilet.
What Currency?
No one wants Australian dollars overseas and even banks and exchange bureaus may be reluctant to change them.
Generally the local currency is best with US dollars and Euros being next, as they are easier to exchange..
In the case of Timor Leste they use US dollars instead of their own currency.
I have also found in Argentina they prefer US dollars to the local peso.
Travellers Hacks
Being able to spend is important for your trip so research and plan a range of options and:
- Do not rely on your phone, take the physical cards.
- If the debit card does not work in the ATM try using the credit card.
- Always do transactions in the local currency.
- Visiting a developing country? . . . carry some US dollars.
