Have you ever had trouble comunicating to the locals you want the toilet?
If you live in Australia like me you will be familiar with ‘Dunny’, but here are some of the names I have found other countries use:
- Wash room – Europe
- Rest Room, or John – USA
- Pissoir (a Urinal) – France
- Loo – England
- Privy – North of England
- Happy room – China
- Comfort room – Philipines
Unusual Symbols – Look Carefully
Just to confuse the communication issue the toilet graphics can sometimes mislead you.
In Bhutan the symbols for men and women reflect the styles of National dress.
Very confusing for us ‘Westerners’.
Travellers Hacks
- Remember in many countries you will need cash to visit public toilets
- Always carry a packet of tissues, as there isn’t always toilet paper in the cubicles.
